Aitkin County covers an area of 1,215,669 acres (1,828 sq. miles), offering endless recreational opportunities. There are over 222,000 acres of tax forfeited land in Aitkin County. Aitkin County was established in 1857 as Aiken County, spelling change in 1872. Aitkin County was named after "William Alexander Aitkin", a fur trader for the American Fur Company. Aiken County originally consisted of the 17 townships closest to Mille Lacs Lake. It acquired out-lands of Ramsey and Pine Counties to its north and east. It was reorganized in 1871, taking up lands from Cass and Itasca Counties and losing a point located in the southwestern corner to Crow Wing County to form its current boundaries.

The county contains what is locally referred to as the Aitkin Bog, a swampy area extending north from Aitkin to within about 10 miles of Hill City. Highway 6 runs through it, wildlife abound.

There are 39 towns/cities, 226 lakes-123,000 acres of water-not counting rivers-including 64,000 acres of Mille Lacs Lake, and 95 miles of the Mississippi River, 4 forests, 37 streams and rivers in Aitkin County.
